Molise consists of about 8,000 hectares of vineyards, divided between "High and Low" Molise. In the high Molise (province of Isernia), tradition and innovation often go by mutual agreement in fact, this is where we can find native and international grapes combined together in wise blends. The lower Molise, however, is the area in the province of Campobasso where the best known version of Biferno is produced, both in red and rosé types, made from grapes of Montepulciano and Aglianico, while the Biferno as white type comes from Trebbiano and Malvasia grapes. The region is divided in mountainous and hilly zones and the soil is predominantly clay, with high percentages of sand and gravel. In other areas, however, soils have a particular reddish colour, because of the high iron content. Lately, wine producers in Campobasso are re-evaluating the "Tintilia", which is a historic native grape of this Italian region.
