Description

Monte Gorna Etna Rosso DOC Riserva by Cantine Nicosia is a complex and elegant red volcanic wine, whose grapes come from the vineyards on the steep slopes of the ancient Monte Gorna, one of the many extinct volcanic cones that surround the village of Trecastagni, in Sicily. The low yields, the manual harvesting and the careful grapes selection give life to an elegant red wine which find its distinctive feature in the typical minerality of the volcanic territory. The blend is composed by 90% Nerello Mascalese grapes, the main Etna grape variety that only here can fully express its particular organoleptic qualities and its marked minerality, and 10% Nerello Cappuccio grapes. The harvest is carefully done by hand usually in the second or third week of October. After a cold maceration for 24 hours, the must ferments in contact with the skins for 3 weeks at a temperature of about 22 °C. The wine is aged in French oak barrels of second and third passage for 24 months and at least 12 months in bottle.

TASTING NOTES

Soft ruby ​​red colour tending to garnet. The nose reveals a great complexity of spicy aromas and notes of licorice, rose, dried flowers and fruits; a broad aromatic profile that evolves further into the glass in elegant tertiary aromas. On the palate you can taste all the vivacity of an intact freshness and soft tannins, but not yet fully tamed; elegant, structured, harmonious overall and long lasting finish. The refinement in French oak barrels helps to further enrich its taste-olfactory profile. We suggest serving this red wine at a temperature of 16-18 °C.

FOOD MATCHING SUGGESTIONS

This wine is an excellent Sicilian red wine to pair with medium-long aged cheese, tagliatelle with mushrooms, pasta with white meat sauce, feathered game, black pork sausage.

Cantine Nicosia was founded in 1898 by Francesco Nicosia, great-grandfather of the current owner, who opened a wine shop in Trecastagni, on the eastern side of Etna. Golden times for the Etna wine, that was already known and appreciated throughout Europe for its mineral strength and its "volcanic" personality.
