Canavese, land of origin of Erbaluce Caluso and Canavese DOC wines, is an area of Piedmont, situated north of Turin, at the borders with Aosta Valley. This is one of the oldest wine-growing areas of Piedmont and at Romans times the culture of the vine was already practised.
The lands, which are mostly hilly, have glacial origin, or derived from debris mass due to the prehistoric glaciers advance. Therefore, this is very ancient, sandy and pebbly soil. The pH is acidic or sub acidic with poor retention.
Cold winters, hot summers and the lack of rain characterized the climate, with high daily temperature range during September, creating the best conditions for the optimal ripeness of grapes.
Established in 1985, just for fun, the Cieck winery, lead by Domenico Caretto and Lia Falconieri, offers wines from Erbaluce grapes, in all versions, plus a small and curated range of red wines, derived exclusively from native grapes of this territory.
Alongside the classic method "San Giorgio" sparkling wine - the first wine produced - there is also the "Calliope Brut" reserve, while the range of Erbaluce, starting with the most daily "Erbaluce", includes the elegant "Misobolo", which comes from the vineyard of the same name, and the innovative "T", result of a research project developed in collaboration with the University of Turin. Last but not least, the dessert "Alladium" wine and "Alladium Riserva", which reproduce and represent the most ancient tradition of Canavese territory.
The range of red wines, from the more traditional and everyday Cieck Red wine, up to Nebbiolo and Neretto di San Giorgio monovines; the latter is a rare native grape, focus point for a recovery and enhancement project and it is proposed also in classic method rosé sparkling wine.
The cultivation of vineyards, which takes place directly, strengthens and gives continuity to the close and deep relationship between wine and its territory; winemaking and sparkling wine production, which take place strictly "in house" and in small lots, preserve the spirit of craftsmanship and attention to quality that has always characterized Cieck wines.
